Organics Recycling

Organics make up 25-35 percent of our garbage and can be turned into valuable compost instead of being thrown away.  Organics are the biodegradable portion of trash that can be composted, including:

• all food scraps such as leftovers, peelings, and spoiled food;
• soiled, non-recyclable papers such as paper towels, napkins, delivery pizza boxes;
• certified compostable products such as plastic food ware and bags labeled with a Cedar Grove  Composting or Biodegradable Products Institute logo.

In 2017, the City of Ham Lake began collecting organics from residents through a new drop-off program.  This local drop-off makes it easier for residents to recycle their organics.  Since the program started, participation has grown to over 100 households.

There is no cost to participate in the organics drop-off program.  For more information and to sign up for the program, residents should come to City Hall to complete a registration form and pick up a free starter kit.  Contact the recycling coordinator at 763-434-9555 with questions.

Certified Compostable Bags for organic collection are available at City Hall in three and thirteen-gallon sizes.
